Combine eggs, flour, baking powder, sugar, spices, and salt in a shallow dish. Add 1/2 cup of the milk and blend well. Pour the remaining milk in a second dish. Melt the shortening in a heavy skillet. Dip the bread, one piece at a time, in the plain milk, then in the batter. Turn to coat both sides. Fry on medium to med-high on one side until golden brown. Turn. Cover the skillet so the batter will puff and cook until the second side is golden. Serve immediately.
