How do I prune a scheflera that is not a dwarf?

I just cut off the stems about 10" or more and stick in loose potting soil to root. Dip end in rooting hormone if you have it and keep fairly damp. I live in South Texas and they grow fine outside in the shade or in a pot on the porch. Even if they freeze in winter, they always come back from the root.
