Cook dates, butter, sugar, and soda in boiling water for 2-3 minutes. Cool.
Add well beaten egg and self raising flour, mix well.
Grease or line with baking paper a long narrow tin. Bake in moderate oven for around 3/4 hour (need to check on).
Remove from tin. When cool, slice and spread slices with butter to serve.

Date-Nut Bread or Tea Bread as I was taught to call it is one of my favorite sweets. I mix up cream cheese and chopped green olives for the most delicious sandwich using Date-Nut Bread. We used to buy these sandwiches at all the Jewish Deli Restaurants from New York to Miami, FL. You can add finely chopped pecans to the cream cheese and olive too if you like.
