I have 2 Labs that are inside children. Marley never meets a stranger. Macey, on the other hand, is a shy little girl. They have the big wire crates in our game room. So before someone comes in, I tell them to kennel up.
After the person sits down, I will let the girls out. Marley is not as prone to lick them to death. And Macey is not as scared to come in the living room and be social, after a few minutes of them talking to her.

I voted this down because I would never ever do this to my dogs, or any other pet for that matter. My guests don't live here, my pets do. I did train my dogs not to jump on people and to greet them "mannerly" (altho as mannerly as the front half of the dog is, the back half is wagging as hard as it can wag!).
I had to give it a thumbs up, just to make it even, because I don't think it deserved a negative vote on the basis of a different view point. If you were doing something that hurt your dogs, that would be a different matter, but this isn't hurting them.
My dog has been trained to behave herself when we have company also. She's a very well behaved girl most of the time. But sometimes she gets so overwhelmed with excitement (especially if we have several guests, or kids) that she simply can't behave herself or hear me telling her to.
When she gets that way, I order her to 'go to bed" until she calms down & can show her manners again. Her 'bed' is her kennel, which is her bed where she takes naps & sleeps at night, her 'safe place' when she is afraid of something or needs to get away from the grandkids. We take it with us when we travel, to keep her safe & calm her nerves. It's also where she has to go when she's out of control & needs to calm down - when she calms down, she's allowed to come back out.
I don't think this is cruel at all. I don't think it's any different than putting your child in time out or sending them to their room until they can get some control over their behavior & calm down. I think what is more cruel is to let her get out of control to the point that she's in such a frenzy she can't listen or behave, jumps on people, sticks her nose in their crotches, licks kids in the face & so forth. And I certainly wouldn't inflict this on my guests.
I absolutely can't stand to go to someone's home where they allow their dog to jump all over me, lick, sniff, wallow all over me,etc. I know someone who has 4 small dogs & when you visit, they bark the whole time you are on your feet, when you sit down they are all over your feet & lap, sniffing, snorting, licking & growling when you move, push them away & they come right back. They totally ignore the owner when she tells them to stop and she is upset that nobody ever comes to visit her anymore!
Absoultely nothing wrong with this! Over-friendly dogs can be a nuisance when they are out of control & annoy your guests. Shy dogs can get aggressive & lash out if they are uncomfortable or feel cornered. Dogs can also get protective of the owner if there's a lot of noise & activity & they don't know if these are 'good' or 'bad' people. Better to give both types a chance to calm down & get a better handle on the situation (while the guests seat themselves) before introducing them.
