Saving Priceless Audio and Video Tapes

There are three main threats to the longevity of audio and video tapes: magnetic fields, moisture, and heat. The tapes are a magnetic media so be careful that they don't come in close contact with household electronics that have a magnetic field. Stereo speakers and TVs both have magnetic fields. You will also want to keep your tapes dry and between 60 and 70 degrees F. If you have a tape that is cold, let it warm up to room temperature before using it.

I am a specialist and assure that this little known idea can and has saved many a priceless and irreplaceable tapes.

Videotapes and cassette tapes that have been stored for a long time, and not played should always be rewound and fast-forwarded once before playing to loosen the reels and prevent stretching or breaking in the machine.
