A few years ago I was going through some boxes that I had put away as storage under our bed. I found things I would have been using, had I remembered that I had stored them! It seemed ridiculous and wasteful to have items just sitting in boxes under my bed, in a closet, or in the garage, etc. Also, I occasionally couldn't find something I knew I had put somewhere, so frustrating and time consuming!
I came up with this simple idea: I purchased an address book. Every time I put something in a spot that I know I wouldn't be looking at regularly, I write the item name down under the corresponding letter, i.e. "Mom's Christmas Gift - top left hand shelf in closet" was filed under "M" and "Cupcake Decorating Supplies - blue box, far right hand corner cupboard in kitchen" was filed under "C".
I now have a little book full of quick references for items that I may suddenly need. Yesterday, for example, we had a heatwave and I wanted some of my kid's swimming items that I had long since put away. I checked my little book and got the items, and away we went.
Sometimes, when life is too full of fun stuff, it's nice to have a little book to help you remember.

That is a wonderful idea. I took all those things that I rarely use but can not get rid of into a plastic bag. I then wrote a list of all the items in the bag.
