This is not very romantic, but it worked for my grandmother-in-law. Her husband used to buy her electric kettles, saucepans, etc. when she wanted something for herself. So she came up with this plan:
Early in October, she would go shopping and pick a ring or a brooch or something she really wanted and put it on layaway. She would give her husband the layaway docket and he would pay it off, wrap it, and give it to her on Christmas day. It also had the added bonus of allowing him to see what she liked. Eventually, he was giving her that sort of thing himself in addition to the present she had chosen!

Take it from someone whose husband did this for many years. It takes the fun out of the special day when the person has to choose their own gift. Most of the fun of getting a gift is not knowing what it is until you unwrap it.
You are right; this is not very romantic. But it surely is better than teakettles. Some women don't mind getting appliances, but others want more personal items. Each of my sons deal with this in a different way; one is happy to have a list of things to choose from, one goes shopping with me and buys the gift that we pick out together for him to give me, and the oldest chooses a gift, as he knows the kinds of things I like.
I can understand both sides of this, my husband sometimes buys me things I'd never consider buying for myself, but loved. He's also taken Ronnie's less romantic method and asked me straight-out to tell him what to buy. We haven't bothered with wrapping for several years now. I don't mind that, I'd be the one to pick up the wrapping paper anyway, lol!
