Removing Discoloration on Vinyl Floor?

I have some "rust" colored spots that are on my vinyl that I can't mop, scrub, or bleach out. They almost look like burn spots, but they are not. So my floor never looks clean. My husband says it may be something coming through from the subfloor. My vinyl is white with a light blue pattern. It's in great shape other than that. Any suggestions to get these spots out?

This sounds weird, but WD40 removes black scuff marks from linoleum and vinyl floors. It might work for your "rust" colored spots, too.

Have you ever heard of a product called "Wink"? It removes rust immediately. If you put it on your spot it just disappears.

I don't know if it work on your spots but you might give it a try. I think Ace Hardware stores carry the product.

Are you sure these are not actual rust spots caused by metal legs on chairs? Perhaps you have a stool or something that is making these marks. If they are actual rust, you should be able to remove them. If it is something staining the lino, coming up from the subfloor, it will be right in the vinyl, and you will never get something like that out. I suspect, though, that is is something from the top surface.

Thanks for the responses. Nothing metal has been sitting on the floor. I think I'll give the WD 40 a try, then may look for the Wink stuff.

I have tried bleach and also steel wool soap pad. Have the same vinyl in bathroom, and don't have rusty looking spots in there.

I, too, had reddish-brown spots on my off white basement linoleum floor. They just seamed to appear. At first I thought it was my hair dye but I would have noticed it and the stains weren't anywhere near where I was dyeing. I tried everything even mineral spirits. I then used a sanding block very lightly and they were coming out slowly. I found a quicker method by wetting the surface with water and using a wetting stone - this worked well. I will now wash and put a wax over the area. Saved me replacing the floor. The stains must have come up from under and adhered to linoleum or vinyl!!
