Marking Laundry Bins

These are my laundry bins to help my family of 6 separate.

One I labeled "Whites"

Things to bleach

  • white socks
  • white washcloths
  • Advertisement

  • white T-shirts
  • white underwear


No reds!

Next one reads "Mediums"

  • light blue
  • light green
  • orange
  • pinks
  • yellows


No reds!

Last one says "Darks"

  • dark blue
  • blacks
  • Jeans
  • reds

I do the same thing. I have 7 in our home and it is much easier to lift a whole basket and dump it into the wash. You also know right away if you have enough to fill a washer load of that color.

That seems like a very good idea for larger families and where you want family members to sort their own dirty clothes. We are a family of 4 so I just sort into piles on wash day.

I don't have good luck washing reds, pinks, oranges
with blues, so I wait until I have at least a "small" load of them and wash them separately from blues

and greens, otherwise I get something like "olive" or
"burple", as the grandkids call it,
if there is a single NEW item that slips past me.
Some sale cotton items bleed colors like mad, as do
some of the "older " garments the kids like to pull from the spare closets/boxes and wear as they become "cool" within their generational fads. Those fabrics are NOT reliably color-fast, believe me. Be careful and on the safe side.
