What Color Countertops Should I Get?

I need a blue for my kitchen counters. Not so dark that it looks black at night, but not light. We really like quartz. We are looking for that blue and yellow French look. The walls are yellow and the cabinets are white with blue flowers.

I googled "quartz countertops" and found a number with blue samples. You could check them out, find something you like, find out where they are available in your area, and go look.

I think quartz is ideal because it gives you some color variation that will add texture. I would go for a middle of the road, leaning toward lighter blue.

I have a neighbor who just redid her kitchen. Although she used a granite, the colors in it were beautiful and unique. It had several shades of blue/green (light to medium) with flecks of a quartz-like blue/green. It looks almost like moving water. Maybe you could find something like it in blue (and in quartz),

I am redoing my kitchen. The cabinets are going to be white. The walls are a reddish color. What color would you recommend for the countertop? I like the look of marble/granite, but will be using laminate.

Well, I love redecorating, but it is hard to give an idea without seeing or knowing how big a piece. But there are so many styles these days. If cabinets are white, walls a reddish, what is the floor? There are laminates with great earth tones. Try checking out the tone on tone type. I think earth tones would be a great idea with what you have going so far. I mean like the rusts, browns, beiges, etc. The "Santa Fe" type look. But in the end, it is always up to you. Be sure to get something you really like or love. You have to live with it. (02/26/2007)

I am currently redoing my house due to hurricane Katrina and it's a bit overwhelming to be doing everything at once. My question is concerning my countertops. I have to cut back on some costs and unfortunately that means no granite tops... so now my concern is what color laminate will work best in my kitchen? The cabinets are a dark cherry and the floors are brick (relatively dark, mixed colors, overall red brick).

The walls aren't painted yet, but they'll be light (either a european white/tan color or a lighter sage color). FYI: I'm not ruling out the granite "look" laminate (unless it looks really fake when I see it in person), but I am still unsure whether the light or dark look would look best? I hope my winding blab isn't too confusing, lol.

With the cabinets and flooring sounding dark already, I think a lighter worktop would give things a lift. There's a massive range of laminate effects available. A nice beige speckled one might be nice if you go with the white/tan walls. I'm sure you can get samples to bring home to compare against your cabinets, that would be safest before taking the plunge. Black and cherry wood go great together! Like a black granite look. With the light walls it will be fine! (09/08/2006)

Angie - I'm sorry for your loss. I'm from Ocean Springs (across the now non-existent bridge from Biloxi!) so there's been a lot of that Katrina "remodeling" going on around here too. I was also looking for countertops and ran across this site. Thanks to the nice folks at Dupont, it can give you an idea of how the counter color looks together with your cabinets and your wall color. Then you can match whatever product you do decide on with a Dupont product or even another similar product/color. Check it out! (You may have to copy and paste the link into your browser.) Click on the button that says "Launch the Room Designer."

I like to have the same tones on like surfaces. For example, the floor and countertops are both horizontal, so their tone should match. In your vertical surfaces, cabinets and walls, cherry wood goes with everything, but especially good jewel tones.

Your brick floors have lots of colors, tones, to use. I have a fan deck, those fan-like ruler-shaped books of paint colors, which I carry with me when I want to compare colors. Get a sample, also called a "memo," of the counter top covers you particularly like to bring home, and check to see how they look with your floors.

NEVER make color decisions in a store. Do that at home when you are relaxed and not rushed. Remember that big sales happen on holidays, so be prepared before the holiday to place an order. (09/08/2006)

If your cabinets are dark, go with a light countertop. If the cabinets are light, go with a dark countertop. The contrast is important. When you look at magazines and kitchen showrooms, you should notice the same thing. (09/13/2006)
