Hi Linda,
Chinese Five-Spice Powder is typically a combination of 5 well-known spices plus salt and pepper.
This is a good recipe for making your own, and you'd be the judge of how much of each. They do not have to be in equal measurements. Most of the larger grocery chain-stores sell at least one brand in with the other spices.
If you would like to make your own, you might start with these ingredients, and then adjust them to your own taste.
1 tsp. ground Szechwan pepper
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. ground white pepper
In almost every Asian cuisine, you will find several dishes which contain the Chinese Five-Spice Powder.
I use it to make a wonderful Polynesian BBQ Sauce which was published on Thrifty Fun Recipes on June 2 of this year.
Five-Spice Powder is a nice spice to add to some favorite sweet pickles for serving with pork, duck or
turkey. We like it best in the BBQ Sauce and I usually have a jar of it already prepared in the refrigerator just waiting for a store-bought roasted chicken.
Hope this helps.
Pookarina
I add it to my coffee when I brew a pot (about 1 teaspoon more or less) and it is less expensive than buying 'flavored coffee!'
There are a lot of yummy stir fry recipes that use it, too. Type 'Chinese five spice stir fry recipes' into your search engine and you'll find oodles of them. ;-)
