Removing Several Rows of Stitches on a Knitted Scarf?

I have made one scarf from the pattern on page 12 in the booklet More Knitting Wheel Fashions, but had trouble getting the provisional knitting off the beginning end so I ended up doing this stitch on both ends of the scarf, which left it looking kind of "tacky". I would like some suggestions on how to best remove this knitting from the scarf.
