You use 'corn starch' that is in the flour section of the grocery market. The starch is manufactured from corn and is a long and detailed process done with special machinery. You wouldn't be able to make it your kitchen.
When using corn starch for things like soup, sauce or gravy first mix it with cold water (or another liquid) until it forms a smooth paste and then add it to whatever is being thickened. If it is added directly into the already cooking food it will form lumps that are then difficult to mash out for a smooth mixture.
