Well lets see! I've used a paper towel, a square cut off of a clean, white, old, tea towel and a man's white handkerchief (clean, of course!)!! I didn't die! I thought I might die if I didn't get that first cup of morning coffee! Since then I bought one of the permanent "gold" colored metal screen filters. I didn't care for it, using it everyday.........but it sure is handy to have when I let myself run out of paper coffee filters!

Paper towels work great as they are lint free. Anjeena
