When traveling, I always throw in a few extra quart size zip lock bags. Then when I buy something on the trip, such as lotions or perfumes, I put them in the bag to avoid any dripping or spilling on to my clothing. They're also great to put any jewelry in that you might take on your trip.

I always use a bag for the motel remote control to the television. I read a nasty statistic about the germs found on them. Some remotes are larger than others so just to be safe I pack a couple extra large bags.
Gallon sized Ziplocs are also very handy if you have leftovers from a restaurant meal. Even if the "to-go" container leaks, it will not make a mess in your cooler.

When traveling, I firmly believe in "Ziplocks or bust." Especially with kids!! I use zip locks when packing for anything that may open in my bag. Like lotion, shampoo, hair product, toothpaste. I use it as a makeup bag for the week. But most importantly I use it for my baby. Dirty diapers can become a really smelly situation. With a housekeeper visiting only once a day those diapers can stack up. Place each diaper in a zip lock and it's odor free vacationing. Also good for those clothing accidents! Ah, ziplock, endless possibilities!

Amen to Ziplocs! I had a nasty mess with powdered baby formula once and luggage then learned about the logic of Ziplocs and airline travel! It doesn't necessarily need to be name brand, just be sure to squeeze out all the excess air! (12/10/2004)

Here's some more reasons to take Ziplocs on vacation. They come in Jumbo size now which is perfect for these tips. When traveling with children, you can pre-match outfits and put everthing in a ziploc so the child knows exactly which top, bottom, socks and underpants to wear that day. This even works for grown men! (ha ha) This is also a good idea if your luggage gets searched at the airport. The security inspectors can search your luggage and see everything without touching your personals. I put everything in my suitcase in ziplocs for this reason. (12/10/2004)

For dirty diapers I always carried around regular plastic grocery bags stuffed into empty prescription bottles and both are free.
One time during a doctor's visit we changed my dd's diaper and put it into one of our bags and the doctor said we could dispose of it in his trashcan, the trashcan in the exam rooms tell you not to do so, but we let us, I guess, because we put it into a bag.

Ziplocks are indeed great. If one is staying in a hotel for multiple nights, they make moving the contents of a suitcase into the dresser a very quick process. I also sit on the ziplocks when I seal them, as turning them into vacuum pouches saves considerable space. Only problem with the latter is high density packing makes it very easy to exceed airline weight limits for checked bags.
