How to Pour a Black and Tan

The black and tan is a perfect drink to enjoy on St. Patrick's Day, but it's also a refreshing treat any time of year.

Ingredients:

  • pint glass
  • bottle of Guinness Irish Stout
  • bottle of Harp Irish Lager or similar lager
  • Guinness Black and Tan spoon or soup spoon

Instructions:

  1. Pour half of the Harp lager into the pint glass. Hold the pint glass at an angle and pour slowly to minimize the head. If it foams up a bit, let it sit for a minute so the head will settle.
  2. Place your spoon on the edge of the glass. If you don't have a Black and Tan pour spoon, you can use a regular soup spoon in a pinch, as I have demonstrated here. Simply angle it downward to minimize the free fall of the Guinness when it is poured.
  3. Pour the Guinness VERY slowly over the spoon, the slower the better. The lighter Guinness will float on top of the Harp lager making a lovely (and delicious) Black and Tan.
  4. Since you have a pints worth of beer left, pour another for a friend or...lift your pint and enjoy, then make a second.

A fun variation, that is especially nice during the summer months, is the Snakebite. Just substitute a hard apple or pear cider for the lager and pour the same as a Black and Tan.
