Removing Tile from Plaster Walls?

Does anyone have advice on removing tile from a plastered wall? We have a 1940's pink bathroom and would like to remove the tile from the walls, but I understand this will not be an easy project. Any tips for making it simpler or to at least help things go more smoothly?

Hate to be blunt but you are better off to just it take off done to the studs. All that glue under the tile and water damage to the wallboard [plasterboard]. This way if need be you can reroute electrical wiring for new lights also.

Yep, the only realistic way to remove tiles from plasterboard is to gut the bathroom and then put up new drywall ...

However, if you don't want, or can't afford, the large project of gutting the room you can paint ceramic tiles for now ;-)

Here is a great informational link with tile painting instructions and if you scroll down to the bottom of the page you'll see a link that says "Ask Tim" (I'll venture to bet he would verify the need to gut if you want to remove tiles instead of painting) and another link at the bottom where you can sign up for an informational newsletter:

We have sheets of Drywall over here which can be fixed on top of tiles and there's no problem with grouting and keeping it clean! It is quite expensive per sheet, though, but might be cheaper than gutting your bathroom.

I think it is used quite a lot here, especially in showers.

How lucky your are. Why remove them? I'd add touches of black and white. Those are probably quality tiles and were installed by someone who really knew what he was doing. Tile is coming into vogue again.
