With so many brands, and so many size of roll and packaging choices, it is extremely difficult to figure the most economical one to choose. If you're not careful, it can become burden on your shopping budget. Any purchasing tips or alternatives to use instead of paper towels?

Many years ago before "paper" towels became so popular...people used cloth rags. This is very eco-friendly.
I cut the tops off old T-shirts, edge stitch them, and use. They work as well and are reusable.
I use very few paper towels. I use dish towels, dish cloths, and old rags (old towels, odd socks cut apart, old tea shirts) for most things. I only use paper towels for really gross clean up jobs such as when the cat upchucks!
Go to the automotive section of WalMart and get a pack of microfiber cloths. They are cheap and come in a variety of colors so you can designate a color for each room. They clean great, wipe spills and last a long time.
