Check out your local yard sales before going to a second hand store. You can usually get a better deal and find more gently used products. Especially near the end of a yard sale, you can usually negotiate a lower price. Also the best yard sells are located in the suburbs.

And as a side note. The time someone puts into making their yard sale sign is a significant to the quality of items for sale. In my experience with yard and garage sales if the signs are placed well and big enough to read and follow the quality of items at the yard sale are usually better than the yard sales with hastily made signs.
Also make sure you add either an address or a distance to drive if the yard sale isn't immediately seeable. If I follow a sign for a yard sale and don't see it or another sign after 3 blocks I turn around and alot of other folks do too.
If you are going to have a yard sale put some time into the signs you post. You get more customers.
Good yard sales are not always in the "better" side of town. Whereas the "better" side many times sell at higher prices or sell totally used-up items, the other side is sometimes wasteful and sometimes not as savvy as the richer side. I've found very gently used items at much better prices on the other side.
