History of Treadle Sewing Machine Cabinets?

I am wondering if wooden treadle cabinets came before the veneer ones or vice versa. I thought they might have a catalog of the different cabinets styles and then the year they were made. Since I am looking for an old treadle machine I am just doing some research, etc. Thanks.
