Here is a good basic cracker from one of my favorite cookbooks "Fast Bread"
A BASIC CRACKER

Dry Ingredients:
2 cups unbleached flour
Half a tsp salt
Half a tsp baking powder

Wet Ingredients:
1 quarter cup chilled butter(no reason why couldn`t use marg or butter flavoured veggie shortening
Half a cup of milk
1 egg, beaten

Mix together dry ingredients. Cut butter or other fat into flour mixture with pastry cutter or work it in with your fingers until mixture is mealy in appearance. Add milk and egg.
Knead thoroughly on lightly floured surface until the dough has a good spring to it. Then roll the dough out very thin. Cut into squares or rounds and place on greased baking sheets. Prick the crackers with a fork. Expect 4-5 dozen standard size crackers.

Bake in 400*F oven for 10 minutes. Remove from oven and using a spatula, place the crackers on wire racks to cool
