With the computerized machines today we are told not to have magnetized pin cushions close so this was a handy solution I found on Martha Stewart.com.
Approximate Time: 20 minutes
Supplies:
- scrap of soft thick fabric 5 inches by ? (length appropriate for your machine)
- scrap of quilt batting
- needle and thread
- sewing machine
- 5 inches of 1 inch elastic
- snap
Instructions:
- Measure around the post of your sewing machine and subtract 4 inches.
- Cut this length measurement from your fabric by 5 inches wide.
- Cut a strip of batting 1 inch narrower than your measurement by 4 inches wide.
- Fold your batting in half lengthwise and lay on one half of your fabric, fold your fabric over the batting and pin in place.
You don't want the batting in your seam. You will make two vertical seams to secure your batting after you sew around your pincushion.
- Cut your elastic 5 inches long and slip it inside your pincushion at one end, pin in place.
- Stitch from the folded edge over the elastic and around to the other folded edge.
- Go back and make two vertical seams approximately 3 inches from each end to secure the batting in place.
- Sew one half of the snap to the elastic and the other to the other end of the pincushion, make sure to get it on the correct side so it will snap together.
You can put more batting in if you want, with this amount you need to put your pins in at an angle.
Making the pin cushion with a snap closure I can easily remove it to use my decorative stitches.
