I already have my cooking and baking menu ready for Christmas but think I'll make these for a New Years treat. I think they'll be perfect for Valentines Day, too :-)
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease cookie sheets.
In a large bowl, cream together the shortening, peanut butter, brown sugar, and 1/2 cup white sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg and stir in the milk and vanilla. Combine the flour, baking soda, and salt in another bowl and stir in to the peanut butter mixture until well blended.
Shape tablespoonfuls of dough into balls, and roll in remaining white sugar. Place cookies 2 inches apart on the prepared cookie sheets. Bake for 10 to12 minutes.
Remove from oven and immediately press a chocolate kiss into each cookie. Cool completely; the kiss will harden as it cools.

Heat oven to 375 degrees F. In a large bowl, combine flour, 1/2 cup sugar, brown sugar, baking soda, salt, shortening, peanut butter, milk, vanilla and egg; blend at low speed until stiff dough forms. Shape into 1 inch balls; roll into sugar. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
Bake at 375 degrees F for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Immediately top each cookie with a candy kiss; pressing down firmly so cookie cracks around edge. Remove from cookie sheets; cool completely. Yield: 4 doz. cookies
