Instead of sugar, I add a whole carrot or two. A trick my mother taught me. I also like using vidalia onion as they add a bit of sweetness as well.

Old recipe. Very good.
Mix all ingredients together in a large pot and slowly simmer for an hour or so on the stove -or- put in crock pot on HIGH until mixture is hot; turn to LOW and cook 2-3 hours to blend flavors.

My husband's favorite!
Saute onions until softened and add washed ground beef, spices, tomatoes, paste and water. Simmer on low 45 minutes to 1 hour. Add water if needed to prevent sticking, or instead of water, add a little spicy hot V-8 juice. Serve over cooked spaghetti or bread sticks.

I'm sorry, never heard the term 'washed' with meat...does that mean rinse the fat away maybe? (02/24/2010)

Bring mixture to a slight boil. Turn heat down to simmer. Simmer for 4-5 hours stirring every hour or so it doesn't stick.
