Snickers and Nugget are both 8 1/2 years old. Snickers is a Rotti/Husky and Nugget is a ShihTzu. Snickers belongs to my neighbor and Nugget is mine. We both have 2 dogs each. Snickers, Pockets (not pictured), and Nugget were all brought home within 2 weeks of each other and have grown up together.
There are generally 5-7 dogs together at one of our houses at any given time. Snickers is absolutely the leader of the pack, but don't tell Nugget, as she thinks she is. If anyone is going to get in a scrap, it is these two. All the others back down or ignore Nugget when she is acting like a queen, but not Snickers. However, as quickly as they irritate one another, you will see them snuggling. This is one of my favorite examples.
They love to explore the woods, swim in the streams, and chase deer and squirrels. Well, the big dogs do anyway. Nugget takes about 10 running steps and decides it is not worth her effort. She prefers to go lie in the shallows of a stream. If she is really hot, she will lie down for a minute and then sort of slither up stream a bit to a cooler patch of water. When the others finish the big chase, they splash in with her.
The position in the picture is where you will find them when we all get home. My motto is, a tired dog is a happy dog! Nugget is an active outdoors girl. I keep her cut short as she is often muddy and full of burs after an outing to the trails.
Snickers is a cancer survivor! She had a soft tissue sarcoma on her foot 2 years ago. After surgery and radiation, she is doing great. It was a long year, but she still has 4 legs, and plenty of energy.
