Avoid bumping into the furniture when you step into a dark room. Wait a minute or so to let your eyes adjust to the dark. Then focus your gaze slightly off-center-your eye's light receptors are concentrated on the sides of the retina, so peripheral vision is better than direct vision in dim light.
