Mix Your Own Paint Colors

I make my own paint colours by buying sample pots (at about $2 each) of colours in a darker shade than I want. Then I mix them in a large pot of cheap white paint. Use as many pots as you need.

I like the more unusual colours that they get in. For example, specialist heritage colours, but they cost a lot of money. You can get sample shades of very expensive ranges in more unusual colours. Although you have to remember that you will need the colour to be much stronger, if you mix it with white. It has worked really well for me and saved a fortune!

Using sample paint pots is a cheap solution if you want to use the paint for temporary painting projects where quality is not an issue. Sample pots are made with cheap pigments and the cheapest binders, so will not last as long as quality paints which have additives to aid adhesion and colorfastness.

If you are painting your own house, then it is worthwhile to select the more expensive brands as these will last longer and will not fade, thus eliminating the need to re-paint as often.
