Check out Lion Brand Yarns' website. They have a list of all the free patterns they have in both knitting and crocheting, including shrugs. Type in "Lion Brand yarns," scroll down to "Welcome...." then click on first indented site below that. www.lionbrand.com/

Has anyone done the Knitting Goddess book's Arachne Shrug??? I need some ideas for the yarn, ways to substitute AND photos of it done. The drawings in the book are not always so clear for me, AND some of the instructions are not either. Someone said in a review of the book that it would be a great class to do each of Deborah's designs as a way to develop one's knitting skills and expertise.... well I've been pondering just that, and I KNOW I will need clearer instructions AND photos.

I LOVE her book and designs!!!!

Thanks,

Check out http://www.Knitty.com. They have a couple of cool ones, including one a woman made to go with her wedding gown (which is the whole reason I was looking for a shrug pattern in the first place!)

http://www.freepatterns.com ...This site has many free patterns for knitting, crochet, sewing, etc. I found a pattern for a shrug there awhile ago. I had a sleeveless pink dress which I took with me to a yarn shop and was able to exactly match the colour.
Another site is About knitting.com. Both sites are great!

You can gret a simple Shrug from Perl Grey:
www.perlgrey.com/knitting_sabine.html

You can either by the complete kit, which tried to do, but the yarn is lovely but to fine for my taste and experience, or you could just order the pattern only via email, and use your own wool.

I'm not sure if this is what you mean but at my knitting group the other day one of the ladies showed us this thing. She used one strand of worsted weight yarn (red heart) and 3 skeins of fancy fur. She casted on, I think, 30 sts with size 11 or 13 or 15 needles and knit it as if she was making a scarf. she made it about 50 inches long. You measure your writs from one end to the other to get the length needed. Then, she folded up the edges horizontally and used the mattress stitch up the sides until almost the middle part. This makes the sleeves. She then showed us how it works by putting her arms in the tubes and then taking the center part and putting it over her neck. It looked pretty easy to make and was so soft and warm!

As far as how much to cast on, I would think that you could just fold it over and wrap it around your arms to see if it would fit. I'm planning on making one next month and experimenting with it. When I get it done, I'll post photos up on my blog: www.noelwright.blogspot.com

Hope this helps! I also saw that www.lionbrand.com had a pattern for one but for a child called Baby Bolero. Perhaps you can get more ideas there. The one my friend made looked a little different than the picture on the lionbrand site. Which I think is because they used just the fancy fur yarn. The worsted weight gives it more body and is less difficult to work with yet still looks furry.
