We had 2 problems. We have never been able to break our 10 year-old dog of her habit of tearing through the garbage whenever we leave the house. Also, although more of a nuisance than a problem, we never seem to find the time to shred our sensitive mail.
Recently, as we were cleaning up from our dog's latest garbage bin binge, I suggested we try something different. Of course we could just empty the garbage leaving her an empty plastic can, but instead we put our gathered mail that was destined to be shred in the can. As luck would have it, when we returned home we discovered that she did, indeed, chomp through the intended papers.
Since we have only tried this once, one of two things may happen over time. She might get smart to us and realize we are tricking her and stop tearing through the garbage once and for all or, thanks to her, we may never have to shred a sensitive document again!

Secure the lid on your trash can with a bungee cord and the dog won't be able to get the lid off.
Great idea. Right now we have trash cans without lids, but I'll keep this in mind when we need to replace them.
Please don't do this! Your dog does not need to eat the papers, and he will if he is tearing them with his mouth. Find another way!
