What is a good color for the walls all over the house?

White, or a very light shade of cream. The reasons people paint all the walls of their homes one colour are:
To save money on paint-far less expensive to buy a five gallon container that you can get three or four small rooms painted with than to buy a single gallon for each room in specially mixed colours.
To make a smaller home look bigger-the single colour fools the eye into thinking several small space (visible via open doors as they pass through the house) is one big, open, airy space. It really works, I've used the trick myself several times.
To provide a neutral background for an extensive collection of art pieces. One single colour on the entire house interior, even if a more trendy neutral like a soft grey, ensures nothing on the walls compete with the display of the collection.
To enhance resale. The first thing a realtor or estate agent will suggest is to repaint any walls painted in decorator colours because prospective buyers have trouble 'seeing' themselves and their things in a home already decorated in your colours.
So white or a very light cream are the safest, most effective neutrals to use in a whole house interior paint job. You can use a more stylish neutral like a very soft grey or chocolate, but those colours do tend to diminish a resale factor.
Are you renting or buying and do you plan on staying in your home long? The reason I ask is that if you plan to be there awhile, paint what colors you like! Why live with boring cream when you can have some color! One way to do it is to go get a color card with graduated shades on it and paint the rooms in those colors or at least some of them.
