Opening Jars With Arthritis

I have rheumatoid arthritis and so have a lot of trouble opening jars. I have found that running some hot water over the jars for a couple of minutes really helps. My family often tighten the lids very tight, and I get tired of asking someone to open them for me.

I bought a jar opener for this purpose and I couldn't live without it. I got it at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. It's easy to use, doesn't require electricity and fairly inexpensive. It has a handle and the opener part has metal teeth that catches onto the lid. I've tried the hot water method and never had any luck with it. Took to long for the water to get hot and wasted water.

I tend to use a floppy rubberized circle as my jar opener. The hot water thing did used to work for my family - my mom had small hands and my brother usually wasn't around.

Mom would also sometimes rap the edges of a jar lid with the handle of a butter knife or anything that was available - anything to break that vacuum seal!
