I can use my laptop in the apartment I just moved into but I don't understand why, since I am not signed up anywhere for the service! How's that?

You are finding a signal from one of your neighbors if you are using a wireless connection.
Your laptop has a built in wireless chip, which must also have a working antenna. It's picking up a nearby signal.
I too get internet service in the boonies without having any paid service. I get a wi-fi signal. Click on your Windows icon in the bottom left corner of your screen and check the "Connect to" link. It will show you how you are connected. Be sure to go into the Network and Sharing Center to block others from gaining access to your computer for your own protection.
You are picking up from a neighbor. I lived in an apartment, and neighbors in another apartment realized they were getting internet on their laptop whenever i was connected on my computer.
