I use "OdoBan" in my final rinse. It makes towels, (and all my laundry) smell fresh wonderful. For stubborn musty odors in clothing, I turn off the washer, and let the final rinse soak for thirty minutes or so.
It is inexpensive ($10 for a full gallon jug plus a 24 oz refillable spray bottle). It has too many uses to mention. It is not a masking agent. It eliminates all odors and kills 99.99% of germs. With six dogs, I wouldn't be without it.

I'd be interested to know where you get it for $10. The least expensive I found was on Amazon for $23. It goes up to $79 from there.
You can get it at Sam's for $10
Odoban can be purchased at Sam's Wholesale Club or Walmart usually for about $12-$14 a gallon and it does come with another full size bottle attached.
I have this very problem and I am almost completely convinced it's the substandard fabric and dyes used in towels today, whether it is dish towels or washcloths, it's there. I use extra hot water and dry them on high for the full length of time to get them dry through and through. I have tried everything everyone has suggested including Lysol sanitizing non-chlorine bleach that is added to the final rinse. Things are a bit better BUT it has to be the cheap way towels are made these days. I've had hand towels where the color came off the center where hands were wiped and they were brand new. We are currently using white towels that a really getting dingy, esp in the center. It occurred to me (duh) that white towels are dyed white just like any other towel is colored. The natural colour of all these textiles is flax colored dyed to whatever color we want.
