Last year's desk calendar makes a great recipe holder or stand for pictures. Sure hope you haven't thrown them away! They stand up on their own and mine has rests on the bottom that hold the card or picture. If yours doesn't, simply glue a small dowel stick the length of the frame to the bottom and spray paint any color, a craft stick would do or get inventive.
For a child's picture frame, use Legos for the picture rest, or any toy they like and won't miss! Buttons for the sewer, a crochet hook for the crotchetier. Lay a piece of glass over the picture cut to fit your frame or use decorative clips to hold the picture.

I'm re-purposing a very old wood medicine cabinet and I'm going take shelves out n put a calender picture on the "back" wall before putting the shelves back in.
