The cover of the dishwasher detergent dispenser broke off. Do I actually need it or can I just add the detergent without a cover?

You can use it without. You may have to open the machine and add soap during the cycle. My dishwasher has a covered compartment that adds soap to the second wash cycle.
I have been using mine without a cover for years and it works just fine.
