I take the batteries out of their packages and store them in a large plastic box with built in dividers from The Container Store. Then I can see at a glance how many AA's and AAA's we have.
I was purchasing a small package of batteries at a time, but with requests for larger quantities from the family, soon found the small packages not enough. At one time, I'd put the batteries in their original packages into separate ziploc bags, but that proved to be annoying, hence the large box idea.
I also made sure to have our back up flashlights all require the same batteries, as we already have in the house. During a power outage, no one needs last minute surprises.
