You could spray paint them, use scrapbook paper, magazine pictures, or some strips of wallpaper and embellish them with felt pens, glitter or what-not.
You could take MacTac and cut out flowers, stripes, and then there is adhesive wallpaper that has a woodgrain and cover them.
I copy two or three really nice cover pages of the magazine that will be in the holder (usually a holiday issue) and then decoupage it to the box. I use one copy to put a title on the edge of the box and put cover pictures on both sides.
