I'm having trouble with my lilac trees. I bought 2 purple lilac trees and when they flower now, the flower is white and smells awful. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks.

Call your county extension office they might can help you, good luck.
Sounds like you got lilacs that were not labeled correctly. There is probably not much you can do to change them; it is just the kind they are. Some types don't have as good or as much scent as the old-fashioned lilacs.
Same problem at my house. I cut some of the white flowers and put in a vase. Later, I hunted through my home trying to isolate the source of what smelled like hobby airplane glue.
Finally someone else that notices the airplane glue smell. I told my Gf that and she thought I was nuts. Especially since shes the one that freshly cuts them and brings them in the house. I remember all the models I built as a kid and smelling lilacs is like a blast from the past. I wouldn't doubt that they have some sort of organic toluene base in them as their fragrance.
