Speaking as a person who lost over 100 lb. in one year, one of best recommendations is to only go to restaurants where you know you can get something that fits into your diet profile - calories, carbs, fats, etc.
Most restaurants have their menus online. Check them out before you go and decide what you are going to get. Reading the menu when you are there is too tempting!

That is an excellent idea. I also check online menus to help decide what I want to eat as I have trouble deciding and usually hold up the rest of my party...lol. This method saves me a lot of time then as I don't even look at the menu.
Good idea, but can you tell us how you permanently changed your appetite, and mainly what foods you eat? Please.
Ausjulie, I have been doing Weight Watchers for about 3 years and have lost over 70 pounds to date. A great deal of the program is teaching you how to eat differently and be mindful of what you are putting in your body. It's not a diet, but a lifestyle change. The recommendations are also very similar to what is suggested for controlling diabetes.
I eat many more fruits, veggies and whole grains now. When I'm really hungry or after I have been exercising, I try to eat something with protein: lowfat cheese, a handful of nuts, Greek yogurt, a small serving of chicken or other meat. I avoid processed foods with extra sodium, fat and unpronounceable ingredients. And I keep the junk food and sweets out of the house as much as possible.
Portion sizes is another big component as many people eat healthily but just too much food at once. I measure my cereal, grains and snack servings to keep me on track. When I eat out, I often will get a lunch portion or appetizer as a meal, instead of the giant dinner portion. Or sometimes I will get the dinner but ask for a take out box and pack up half of the food for a future meal. I can also get my husband to split a meal with me sometimes.
I look for food that are simply prepared and am not afraid to ask to have veggies steamed instead of sauteed in butter or oil, to have fattening condiments or cheese to be left off, or for dressings on the side. Many restaurants have "light" options too, so that is a great place to start.
