If you like to hike, camp, or do outdoorsy things, but don't want to spend a lot of money on an expensive GPS system, you might want to try printing out a free topographic map online. AnyplaceAmerica.com has maps of the US that you can sort by city, county, or by feature. We live near a lot of old mining towns, and wanted to do some exploring. We looked up several locations at GhostTowns.com, and then printed out some topographic maps of the towns. We put them in plastic sheet protectors to keep them dry, and had a great time visiting old ghost towns.

Thanks so much! We are travelers and do appreciate your advice, as we enjoy exploring as we travel to new areas of the U.S.
I really like your tip and I guess I am a die hard because no gadget is ever going to pull me away from using the good old fashioned map and compass. ;-)
