Tie your garbage can lids to the handles of your garbage can to keep the lid from blowing away on windy days.

We use bungee cords on our trashcan to keep the raccoons out.

It doesn't hurt to put your name & address in permanent marker on your trash can lid. For just in case the lid does blow off, then when found, someone can return it.
Hello.
Very much appreciate these thoughts about discouraging outdoor activities of raccoons, but can you offer advice about what to do when RACCOONS have taken up living inside the walls of a house, and make a loud racket, and chew on things?
Thanks.
Want to encourage them to live elsewhere, and really don't know how. Nothing has worked so far.
Been there done that several times :( We had to replace our roof after raccoons chewed seven holes in it and got in the upstairs. We had to eventually have a trapper come and catch them....several times and unfortunately, it's not cheap but has to be done or they will chew up your house. I recently had trees that were close to the house with branches too close to the roof cut back and so far that has helped. The trapper told us to buy coyote/wolf urine spray and spray around the house. You can buy the spray at one of the outdoor sports stores.
How do you discourage racoons from not even coming near the trash can? I have a bungee cord on my can and it works great. The racoon can't get in but he/she tries and bangs the can all to pieces in the wee hours of the morning. Help! Many sleepless nights!
We have a purpose made spring fastener to keep our trash can lid closed. Wouldn't be without it!
CAN NOW RACCOON PROOF!!
Bungees work well for me. I run the bungee through the second handle and attach it to my chain link fence, so they can't even knock the can down.
My problem is always collection day. The truck comes around or before 7am in my area, so I have to put the cans out the night before. If I leave bungees on my trash can at the curb, the garbage guys (sanitation engineers?) won't even touch it.
Raccoons are a problem for us too. When we take our dog with us (boating, etc.), they come in the dog door. They eat anything - dog food, candy, tear open bread bags, etc.. We put bright motion sensor lights that come on when something comes in the dog door.
