I always thought that praying mantis were only green in color. So. I started doubting my sanity after taking the photo of this one on a large leaf bush just off of my patio. Well, I am sure many folk doubt my sanity anyway but it's bad when one doubts their own. LOL ;-)
Anyway, decided to look up Praying Mantis colors and sure enough; they are brown when they are in a dry environment. I live in a high desert area and it's been over two months since we've had more than a sprinkle of rain so this makes complete sense to me. Wish I could have captured a complete side view that shows the long narrow upper body but couldn't because there were other leaves to the left in the way of that angle.

Nice shot! I have actually never seen one in real life :) PS I don't doubt your sanity one bit ;) x
Hey had a pod of these when I was a kid, think it was Gurneys seed where you used to be able to order them, if they would only eat the cockroaches outside think I'd have some now. Such a cool insect, though glad I'm not a male one. lol
We regularly saw praying mantises where I grew up in a suburb of Indianapolis, but I don't remember ever seeing a brown one. That's pretty cool!
If I was him I'd be praying I was right side up.
