For years, all I have used to cure a sore throat is to mix 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar in a tepid glass of water, then gargle with it. Do this once an hour until the pain is gone. It doesn't take long. If the pain is down lower than a gargle seems to reach, you can swallow it. Kids love to gargle! It's also good to start gargling as soon as you begin to feel a sore throat coming on.
If you don't have apple cider vinegar you can use 1 teaspoon salt, although you'd probably not want to swallow it.
Source: Seems like I read about it in a book by J.D. Jarvis, if I remember right. It's a book on the benefits of using apple cider vinegar, an old book!

Here's a tip my doctor gave me: gargle with a solution of 1/2 hydrogen peroxide and 1/2 water (I use warm water). Do NOT swallow.
