Crumble first 4 ingredients well. Pack into a greased 8X8 inch baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes.
Combine next 4 ingredients in heavy saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Boil 5 minutes, stirring constantly as it burns easily. Remove from heat. Beat with spoon slowly until it shows signs of thickening. Pour over bottom layer.
Melt chocolate chips in saucepan over low heat or over hot water. Pour over second layer and chill. Cut into squares.

Although these sound very good and I want to make them today, I am a little concerned about the 3 mentions of butter and also some of the directions. Please take another look. Thanks for posting such a tasty sounding toffee squares.
I'm puzzled about the butter references, too, plus the recipe calls for "cups" of chocolate chips, but not the number of cups. Thanks for the clarification, this sounds like a yummy recipe!
Sorry for the delay in replying.
The recipe is OK but it should read two cups of semi sweet chocolate chips.
