Having just moved about 1 1/2 months ago, I can definitely testify that it is an exhausting process. One thing that helped us out a lot was to ask friends to help us with loading and unloading. We have one of the coolers with a water dispenser. We loaded it with ice and water and had disposable cups for our helpers. When we were all done, we went to Pizza Hut and we paid for their lunch. Because we had about 8 people helping, it was all done in just a few hours.

Yes! ...You can ALWAYS tell who your REAL friends are when it comes moving time! ...I try to help others move whenever I can, because this way, (hopefully) they'll remember & be there to help me when & if I need them...
* One way for some of the older folks (or those with a bad back) to help with the move is to baby-sit... Last time my daughter moved, she designated me "Watcher of the grandchild" & this freed her up to do "moving things" without a toddler under foot which made the move go twice as fast.
Another tip (in this time of extremely high fuel costs) is to rent a large moving truck... We rented a large truck to move about 60 miles for under $225 (Budget Rental) so this way we only had to make the long drive one time instead of 20 or 30 in a smaller truck (saving massive amounts of gasoline)... It was also raining & this large truck protected my household belongings where an open back pickup truck would not.
* Be sure to call around for prices, because U-haul charged almost twice as much as Budget did & each U-haul (or Budget) has different prices as some are owned by the company & some are owned my individuals... It's usually much less expensive if you return the moving van or truck to the original place of rental.
I had used Uhaul before with no problem, but because I did not know until 1 week before the move when we would have helpers, I did not make my reservation until then. Uhaul did not have any equipment in my city for that day, but they did not call me about it until the day before. We were out of cell phone range, so we did not get the call. They sent me an email instead which I did not receive until it was too late. I really wanted to cancel the reservation and go to Budget Rental, but cancelling on the day of the move results in a $50 charge. So, we not only paid for the rental, we also had to pay for mileage to drive it to and from a town 26 miles away. Another lady at the Uhaul store was told by Uhaul to pick up her rental at 9:00pm, but was told by store personnel that the store is closed at that time. This is so ridiculous.
