Removing a Broken Window

Apply pieces of masking tape to the window in a crisscross pattern on both sides of the window. Then gently tap around the outer edge of the window with a hammer until the glass breaks out. The tape should help keep the window from shattering but be sure to wear protective gloves.

I like the idea of the masking tape; but why would you break out the window? Won't that leave shards of glass in the frame, making it hazardous to replace? Maybe I am missing something?

If the glass is in the frame; put the heavy gloves on, and remove any loose pieces of glass. Then, carefully remove the putty or glass-retaining frame pieces and remove the remainder of the broken pieces.

Wrap the pieces of glass in multiple layers of newspaper, then put that in a brown paper bag or a recycled cardboard box (like a cereal box) and tape or tie it shut. I like to write "broken glass" on the bag and set it next to my trash can, so the guys know what they're tossing. They work too hard, and get paid too little to have to deal with getting cut.

Some windows have tempered glass in them.Once broken they fall in to many many small pieces of glass. This is to prevent someone from cutting them selves on a large piece of glass.Replacement windows glass in the home should be replaced with tempered glass
