For a handy way to have string at your fingertips, try this. Hang a cheap funnel as a dispenser, with the roll of twine or string in the top and the end running down through the spout. This is nice for kitchen, basement, garage shop, or garden. Just keep a small knife handy to cut the twine or string. This will also keep you from having tangles and knots in the string or twine. It might even work for yarn for knitting or crocheting.

It also works well to cut the bottom off a milk jug or detergent bottle. Hang spout down and tie a scissors to the handle.
This sounds like it would work great for string, but take it from someone who knows, it would not work with yarn! I do plan to hang a few funnels around for string though.
Another thing, instead of keeping a knife handy to cut it, I'm going to use an "S" hook and hang a small pair of scissors on each funnel. Less chance of cutting myself, and it's a lot easier to cut with one hand with scissors than it is with a knife.
Super tip! :)
