Can I Spray Dry Wall Type Texture on Plaster Walls?

Can regular drywall texture be sprayed onto painted plaster walls? If so, is there any special preparation necessary prior to texturing? The walls were papered, but that has been removed and the paste washed off. Thanks in advance.
