We just planted an elm tree in our yard, and I looked up the toxicity because we have dogs and horses. It is supposed to be nontoxic, so it should be OK if your pup swallows a few.

Some years ago we had a smart border collie. She enjoyed eating elm leaves. I first noticed this while taking her for a walk, and she would stop at a hedgerow to eat leaves from an errant seedling I later identified as elm. My mother and our neighbor would leave volunteer elm saplings near their foundations for her to enjoy. One time we were vacationing in our motor home in northeast Iowa. Her doggy breath was horrendous.

My son said that what Katie needed were elm leaves. We pulled off onto a frontage road behind a McDonalds, where we spied two small elm saplings. We opened the door for Katie, pointed to the elm trees, and instructed her to go get them. They settled her tummy. She did not vomit. In early spring, she would search in the snow for seedlings. A secret well known to this particular border collie.

My german shepherd is obsessed with eating elm leaves. Not the twigs or branches. She is highly trained but blows me off when she smells an elm sappling in our yard. I think its more than tummy settling. There must be a chemical in elm that dogs really crave big time.
