At his age, most kids are really into music. If he has an iPod, you can get him a gift certificate to iTunes. You can go to iTunes online and register to buy the gift certificate. Then he can download any song/s or album of his choice. You could also buy him a gift certificate to a store that sells CD's so he can purchase an album in that store. The young man will think you are so great to do that.
Gift card or cash are always good for teenagers. That way they can buy the things they like. My kids like getting gifts, but they love to be able to combine their cash or gift cards to buy what they've been wanting too.
If you want to give an actual gift and not a card, think of what he likes, and try to buy something that will go with that. Also, "manly" type of gifts are good for 16 year olds, things like a shaving kit bag of leather or a nice watch.
